07. Bhagavad-gītā 16.21 — Lust as Gate to Hell
The Three Entrances to Darkness
📜 The Verse (Sanskrit)
tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet
🔍 The Geometry of the Fall
Krishna uses the word Dvāram (Gate). He explains that there are Tri-vidham (three kinds) of gates that lead directly to Narakasya (Hell). These gates are Kāma (Lust), Krodha (Anger), and Lobha (Greed). Most importantly, He explains that these gates are Nāśanam Ātmanaḥ—the 'Destruction of the Soul.' This doesn't mean the soul dies, but its 'Spiritual Awareness' and 'Dignity' are completely obliterated by these forces.
🛡️ Why Lust is the Lead Gate
- The Serial Connection: Lust is the 'Leader.' When lust is frustrated, it automatically transforms into Anger. When lust is partially satisfied, it leads to Greed for more. By controlling the 'Gate of Lust,' you effectively lock the other two as well.
- The 'Hell' of the Mind: 'Hell' is not just a place we go after death; it is a State of Consciousness. A mind burning with unsatisfied lust is a hellish environment—restless, agitated, and devoid of peace.
- The Command to Abandon (Tyajet): Krishna's instruction is not to 'Manage' these gates, but to Tyajet (Abandon/Give up) them. There is no 'Safe Level' of illicit lust, just as there is no 'Safe Level' of poison.
🛡️ The 'Gate-Closure' Protocol
- Identify the Entry Point: The moment you feel a surge of lust, mentally state: "A gate to naraka is opening in my mind. I refuse to enter." Visualization of the consequence is the best defense against a sudden urge.
- The 'No-Negotiation' Rule: The mind will try to tell you: "Just a little bit of greed or a little bit of lust won't hurt." Remind the mind of Krishna's word: Nāśanam (Destruction). Reiterate that any engagement with these gates is an act of spiritual suicide.
- Guard the Values: Since these gates destroy the soul's qualities, protect your qualities through Sādhana. Every round of Japa you chant is like adding a 'Bolt' to the gate of hell. Chant to lock the door.
🌟 Conclusion
You are meant for the 'Gate of Vaikuntha' (The spiritual world), not the gates of naraka. By identifying and abandoning the impulses of lust, anger, and greed, you maintain your spiritual sovereignty and your internal joy. Be a gatekeeper of your own heart. Stay vigilant, stay detached, and stay pure.
