06. Tongue Control through Nāma
06. Tongue Control through Nāma
There is a profound biological and spiritual link between the Tongue and the Genitals. Every spiritual master in the Vedic tradition has taught that one who cannot control the tongue can never control the urge for lust. Engaging the tongue is the 'Master Key' to Brahmacharya.
👅 The Master of the Senses
The tongue has two functions: Tasting (Bhikṣā) and Speaking (Vacas).
- The Impulse Pipeline: Lustful agitations often start as a 'loose tongue.' Speaking worldly gossip or eating stimulating, non-sanctified food heats up the nervous system and creates an immediate pressure on the lower senses.
- The 'Top-Down' Control: By engaging the tongue in the constant oscillation of the Holy Name, you are 'pre-occupying' the senses' commander. A tongue chanting Japa has no time to speak nonsense or crave temporary pleasure.
🔊 The Power of Vocal Sound
Even if you cannot chant in your heart, chant with your tongue. The physical act of moving the tongue to form the names of Kṛṣṇa creates a spiritual 'vibration' that cleanses the throat and the heart.
📖 Scriptural Insight: The First Urge
In the Upadeśāmṛta (Verse 1), Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī explains that a person must control 6 urges. The first three are the urges of the Speech, the Mind, and the Tongue.
"One who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind’s demands, the actions of anger and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world."
Note the order: Speech and Tongue come BEFORE the genitals. Control the mouth, and you control the man.
🛡️ The 'Nāma-Tongue' Protocol
- Kṛṣṇa-Prasādam: Only give your tongue food that has been offered to the Lord. This purifies the 'Tasting' sense at its root.
- The 'Vacuum' Defense: If you find yourself in a situation where worldly talk is high, start chanting internally or softly. This creates a 'Spiritual Vacuum' that prevents the worldly vibrations from entering your consciousness.
- Active Japa Break: If you feel a sudden surge of physical lust, chant out loud for 5 minutes. The physical movement of the tongue in chanting disrupts the physical signal of the lower urge.
🌟 Conclusion
The tongue is the gatekeeper. By stationing the Holy Name at the gate of your mouth through consistent Japa, you ensure that only purity enters and only truth exits.
