09. Walking Japa vs Sitting Japa
To build a rock-solid chanting infrastructure, you must know how to use your body dynamically. Some days your mind is restless (Rajas), and some days it is sleepy (Tamas). Choosing the right mode of Japa ensures you never lose your rounds to lethargy or agitation.
🧘 Sitting Japa: The Pillar of Absorption
Sitting in a steady posture (Asana) is the traditional way to reach deep meditation.
- When to use: During the early morning hours (Brahma Muhurta) when your energy is fresh.
- Benefit: It allows the mind to reach a state of Focus-Lock. By removing the work of the legs, all energy can go to the ears and the tongue.
- Risk: If you are tired, sitting leads directly to 'The Nodding Zone' (sleep).
🚶 Walking Japa: The Conqueror of Tamas
If you find your head dropping or your mind wandering into daydreams while sitting, immediately stand up and walk.
- When to use: When you feel sleepy, restless, or when you are chanting later in the day after work.
- Benefit: Physical movement keeps the brain 'On.' It is much harder for Māyā to catch a moving target. The rhythmic step of walking helps create a 'Tantric Pulse' that matches the rhythm of the Mahamantra.
- Risk: You may become distracted by objects in your path. Keep your gaze lowered (about 4 feet in front of you) to avoid visual distractions.
🏗️ Creating an 'Unbreakable' Session
- The 50/50 Rule: Start your first rounds sitting. The moment you feel the 'Sleep Cloud' approaching, stand up and finish the rest walking. Don't fight a losing battle with sleep; change the mode.
- The Pace: Walk at a steady, dignified pace. Not a stroll, not a sprint. The rhythm of your walk should support the rhythm of your tongue.
🌟 Conclusion
Whether sitting like a mountain or walking like a lion, the goal is the same: Attentive Hearing. By switching modes strategically, you make your daily vow of Japa invincible against the changing modes of nature.
